The long over due replacement of the boat house roof has been completed. Thanks to our new maintenance man Doug Pritchett and other helpers the flat rubber roof has been replaced for the cost of materials. Painting and staining of the main house, wheel house, lodge, boat house and deck have also been complete thanks to work exchangers.

Lodge Refurbishing
May brought some major changes to the Ranch! In the Lodge we've pulled out the carpet that served us for nearly forty years, re-did the hardwood floors and gave the walls a fresh coat of paint. The mainhouse has been spruced up with new paint in the guest rooms and halls. We cleaned out the greenhouse, put up new plastic and shelves, and are utilizing the growing space.

Broadband Initiative -Speeding Up
We are excited to announce that our goal to bring high speed Internet (broadband) to SOM is well on its way. We now have enough money to build a tower and bring the signal to that tower. Thank you to all who have donated for your generosity! We still need more donations to complete the project of bringing the signal to buildings throughout Song of the Morning. Having broadband will allow us to do so many things that are now either impossible or require a tremendous amount of time and energy to accomplish. One member has pledged to match all donations up to $25,000 and we have raised an additional $5,000; another $20,000 is needed.

Work Exchangers Needed
We are currently accepting applications for immediate openings and for those who'd like to spend the summer with us. These long term (3-5 month) work exchangers will complete various tasks around the Ranch (gardening, lawn work, housekeeping, kitchen, etc.) and help with Yoga Fest 2012. These work exchangers must be willing to camp, providing their own camping equipment. Indoor bathroom facilities will be provided as well as meals. Mentoring in sustainability, organic gardening, the culinary arts, guest services, meditation and yoga practice will be provided. If this sounds appealing please apply today.

Domes Project
We have a new master at Song of the Morning. Actually two of them, Tom Willis has been deemed the "Wood Master". He has been put in charge of keeping our new wood burning boiler the Wood Master II filled twice daily. The new Wood Masters are keeping our domes a comfortable 74 degrees without the high cost of propane. The duct work for the furnace has been completed giving a more efficient and even distribution of heat throughout the domes. The wood master is also heating our hot water heater reducing our use of propane in the domes to virtually nothing. This is a giant step towards sustainability both financially and environmentally for the Ranch plus gives us comfortable use of the domes throughout the winter months.

Sustainability is the New Buzz Word at the Ranch.
You'll notice changes this year at the Ranch as we learn more about and increase our practices in sustainability. Paulette Stenzel, published professor from Michigan State University, is frequenting Song of the Morning and educating the staff, management, and board on becoming more sustainable. See her website at: www.tradeandsustainability.com . We are increasing our efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle. We are making wiser decisions in our purchases: decreasing the amount of plastics, purchasing in bulk, and seeking Fair Trade products when economically viable. We've resurrected the hydroponic room and we will be getting the greenhouse back up and running this spring. These are a few of the changes we are making at the Ranch as we seek to be a leader in creating less waste and a healthier planet. Of course, it will take time and more education, but we are heading in the right direction.
